An armed society is a polite society

Borrowed from: Republican Form of Government.
IMPOLITE TO DISARM

Robert A. Heinlein wrote, "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life."

Let us dissect this fully.

SOCIETY : A long-standing group of people sharing cultural aspects such as language, dress, norms of behavior and artistic forms.
POLITE : Well-mannered, civilized.
The opposite of rude, impolite, uncivilized.
CIVILIZED : Showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement; humane, reasonable, ethical. Marked by refinement in taste and manners.
MORAL : Conforming to a standard of right behavior.
HUMANE : Having or showing concern for the pain or suffering of another; compassionate.
REASONABLE : Just; fair; agreeable to reason.
ETHICAL : Of or relating to the accepted principles of right and wrong.
MANNERS : Etiquette.
GOOD MANNERS : The treatment of other people with courtesy and politeness, and showing correct public behavior.
COURTESY : Polite behavior.
ETIQUETTE : The forms required by good breeding, or prescribed by authority, to be observed in social or official life; observance of the proprieties of rank and occasion; conventional decorum; ceremonial code of polite society.
DECORUM : Appropriate social behavior; propriety.
PROPRIETY : Correctness in behavior and morals; good manners, seemliness.
SEEMLINESS : Appropriateness of conduct or behavior.

In other words, a group of people who disdain the law of the jungle (predation), embrace the law of love (harmless productivity), are compassionate, just, fair, and courteous, should be intolerant of that which trespasses or threatens their persons, property, liberty, decorum or society, and may use force, up to and including deadly force, to maintain conformance to their standards of right behavior.

When “freedom” is limited to natural liberty upon one’s private property and the “right to travel” upon the public ways, there is no “freedom” to trespass, annoy, misbehave, or be impolite outside of one’s domain, and especially, not in public, where one should conform to standards of right behavior.

Once society is barred from enforcing civilized behavior, it descends into uncivilized behavior.
